LEARNING TO FEEL WHAT WE FEEL

I often say you have to feel it to heal it. Feelings are felt, not thought. The key to emotional freedom and healing, as well as many other things such as embodied spiritual experience, is to learn to feel what we feel, to get out of our heads and in to our bodies.

To do this we need to begin practicing connecting to the sensations in the body. It often takes time to begin to break through the dissociation/numbness that most of us are stuck in – the disconnect with our own bodies is something we have been trained in to from childhood.

With time and patience we can begin to feel fully and heal holistically slowly trusting our bodies to become our compass and guiding force of wisdom.

Read this list. Don't try to remember the words just let them enter your consciousness. Then close your eyes. Take a few breaths. Allow your awareness to drop down and in to the body and scan through slowly from the feet up. Just notice what you notice. How different sensations are present in different areas of the body. FEEL. As you work your way up, pay particular attention to the stomach area, the solar plexus just below the ribs, the heart and the throat. Refer back to the sensations list afterwards and make notes of what you feel you feel. Don’t judge any of it or try to change it or analyse it. Just be with it.

A similar practice can be done with the feeling wheel. Glance at each word for a few seconds and notice if anything happens in your body as you read each word - see if you emotions connect without mentally considering whether or not you you think you feel them.

Practice for a few minutes each day. Be patient with yourself. Be curious.
